A photographic journey at Makanyi Lodge

Situated deep in the south western section of the Timbavati is Makanyi Lodge , the location of my private photographic tuition for the next few days.

Makanyi lodge recently opened as a new commercial lodge in the Timbavati and are offering  a verity of different activities for their guests.

Leopoldo and Carolina from Mexico were on the outside deck having lunch when I met them, they were first clients that had booked the Makanyi photographic tutoring safari experience

After introductions we sat down and discussed the photographic goals of both for the next few days , we set up cameras and got settings right to maximize their wildlife photography.

The new Makanyi specialized photographic vehicle. Was waiting for us in the car park and after a brief demo and practice run on their Gimpro photographic arms  we were ready to set out .

Our first game drive  we saw good general game sightings of antelope giraffe and elephant and on the way back to lodge

we found a chameleon which gave us the opportunity to do some special lighting effects.

The next morning was glorious and we had the opportunity of doing some silhouette work with a sunrise and a nesting pare of eagles.

The photographic vehicle proved to be a great help to provide a steady platform while photographing at low shutter speeds.

Over the next few days we did a lot of work getting the settings right for different wildlife situations, adjusting shutter speeds aperture and working with under and over exposure compensation

The African bush is full of surprises, one morning while looking for rhino we spotted a a dark object high up in a marula tree .Apron further investigation we saw it was a leopard cub  but why was it right at the top of the tree ,? That’s not normal behavior.

Further investigation revealed a pride of lions a short distance away, now all made sense.

We found the lions one night again and dialed in our settings for night photography and could do some side lighting and back lighting.

During the day our post processing session proved to be valuable to Leopoldo and Carolina and we covered topics like overcast days and hi key processing

After the 4 days of photographic tuition the clients left with lovely images of the ever beautiful Africa.
